It's the one that does the best job of telling Google who it is, what it does and where it is.

It's common to find clinics with twenty years in business that don't show up on the map in their own neighborhood, and businesses that just opened ranking first. That's not luck. Behind it there's a well-configured profile, reviews that come in every week and a website that confirms what the profile says.

In this guide I'll show you how to win the map for 2027, step by step: how Google decides local rankings according to its own documentation, how to create and optimize your Google Business Profile (the old Google My Business) field by field, how to get reviews without breaking the law, what your website needs, how to show up in AI Mode, Ask Maps and ChatGPT, and how to measure whether all of it actually brings in customers.

I always separate what Google says, with a link to the source, from what's my own judgment. Reviews, your website, mentions on other sites and how consistent your information is everywhere are what decide whether you rank first or seventh.

What is Google My Business, and what is it called now?

Google My Business (GMB) is the old name of what's now Google Business Profile: the free listing that shows your business in Google Search and on Google Maps with its address, hours, phone number, photos and reviews. It's the same tool; only the name changed.

That's why people search for it in so many ways: Google business listing, Google Maps listing, Google business page, GBP or GMB. Today you manage it from business.google.com or directly from Search and Maps while signed in to the owner account. In this guide I call it “Business Profile” or simply “your profile.”

Google renamed Google My Business to Google Business Profile in November 2021 and moved profile management into Search and Maps.

What is the Google local pack?

The local pack (also called the map pack or 3-pack) is the block with a map and three businesses that Google shows when a search has local intent, usually above the organic results. On mobile, many people also go straight to Google Maps, where the list is longer. Getting into those top three spots is the goal of almost everything that follows.

Today a local business can show up in many more places than the map:

Where you show up

What feeds it

What you control

Local pack (the map block on Google)

Business Profile, reviews, website and mentions

Almost everything except distance

Google Maps

The same, with more weight on the user's location

Profile, photos, hours and reviews

Local organic results

Your website: service, location and contact pages

Content, links and technical SEO

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode

The same sources as Search, including Business Profile

Making sure your information is complete and consistent

Ask Maps (Gemini inside Google Maps)

Profile data and user reviews

A complete profile and detailed reviews

ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity

Websites, directories, lists and business data providers

Your website and your presence on industry sites

Apple Maps and Bing

Apple Business Connect and Bing Places

Listings with details identical to Google's

Which businesses need local SEO?

Any business that serves customers in person in a specific area needs it: at its own premises (a clinic, a restaurant, a store, a law office) or by going to the customer (a plumber, a remodeling company, a cleaning service). Google makes this clear in its requirements: to have a Business Profile, someone has to serve customers in person during the stated hours.

According to those same guidelines, businesses that exist only online, rental or for-sale properties, and lead generation agents that only pass leads on to others can't have a profile. If you only sell online, what you need is plain SEO, not local SEO.

Algorithm

How to rank higher on Google Maps: how Google decides local rankings

Google explains it in its help center: local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, and there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. All of local SEO comes down to improving the two factors that depend on you and not fighting the third one.

Relevance

How well your profile matches what the user is looking for. It's a survey of specialists, not Google documentation.

Can you pay to rank first on Google Maps?

Not in the free results: Google states that you can't pay for a better local ranking. What does exist is Google Ads, which can appear in Search and on Maps labeled as sponsored. That's a different game: when you stop paying, you disappear. A well-targeted Google Ads campaign is there to fill your calendar while your profile climbs, not to replace it.

Why does my ranking change depending on where I search from?

Because distance is one of the three factors. If you search for “dentist” standing at your clinic's front door, you may rank first; if you search for the same thing two kilometers (a little over a mile) away, you might rank ninth. That's why a single search from your phone tells you nothing. To see where you win and where you lose, grid tools (geo-grid rank trackers) repeat the search from dozens of points on the map and show you your ranking neighborhood by neighborhood.

Step 1

Step 1: create your Google Business Profile and get your business on Google Maps

Creating your profile is free and you do it at business.google.com/add, but first check two things: that your business meets the requirements and that there isn't already a profile created by Google, by a former employee or by a previous agency. A duplicate at the same address is one of the most common reasons a business doesn't show up.

If the profile already exists and nobody has verified it, find it on Google Maps and tap “Claim this business.” If someone else verified it, you can request ownership from the profile itself. Once that's clear, setup follows this order:

Real name

Primary category

Address or service area

Phone and website

Verification

Your name, as it appears on your sign

Google requires your profile name to match the name you use in the real world (signage, website, invoices) and prohibits adding unnecessary information: services, cities, taglines or hours. Its own example: “Regal Pizzeria,” not “Regal Pizzeria Open 24 hours.” Something like “Sonrisa Dental Clinic · Dental Implants Valencia” is exactly what not to do, and it also makes video verification harder, because your sign doesn't say that.

How do I get my business on Google Maps if I work from home?

As a service area business: you set up the profile with your address for verification, but hide it from the public and define the areas where you work. Google allows up to 20 service areas, set by city, ZIP or postal code, or area (not as a radius around your address), and recommends they extend no farther than about two hours' drive from your base.

A plumber in Seville who works from home would list Seville, Dos Hermanas and the nearby towns he actually goes to, not “all of Andalusia.” Covering more ground won't make you show up farther away: distance is still measured from your registered location.

How long does it take for my business to show up on Google Maps?

As soon as your profile is verified (I explain how right below), it shows up when someone searches for your business name. Ranking at the top for generic searches (“auto repair shop in Getafe”) is a different story: it depends on the competition in your area and on the reviews and mentions you build up, and that's measured in months, not days.

Verification

Google My Business verification postcard: how to verify your Google Business Profile

The Google My Business postcard is the mailer Google uses to confirm that your business is at the address on your profile. It contains a 5-digit code that you enter in your Business Profile to verify it. It's only one of the possible methods: Google decides which ones it offers you, and you can't change them.

Verification is what gives you control of the profile and, according to Google, makes it more likely to appear in results. These are the methods described in its help center:

Method

How it works

Watch out for

Phone or text

You get a code and enter it in your profile

Automated phone menus (IVR) can't receive the code

Email

You follow the steps in the email Google sends you

Use a business email address that someone actually checks

Video recording

You record your location, your business and proof that you manage it, live

One continuous, unedited video, shot on your phone

Live video call

A Google representative guides you while you show them your premises

Only available during your business hours

Postcard by mail

You receive a 5-digit code

Don't change your name, address or category while you wait for the code

After you complete verification, the review can take up to 5 business days. If your website is verified in Search Console, some verifications are instant.

How long does the Google postcard take, and where do I enter the code?

According to Google, most codes arrive within 14 days and expire after 30. When yours arrives, sign in to your profile, type the 5 digits in the “Code” field and click “Submit.” While you wait, don't change your name, address or category, because the code would stop working. And don't give it to anyone, not even the person who manages your profile: Google will never ask you for it.

What if my Google postcard never arrives or the code has expired?

Don't request another code too soon: Google cancels the one in the mail and sends you a new postcard, so the whole process takes longer. Check that the mailing address on your profile is written correctly. If the code expires, request a new one; if verification doesn't go through, the “Verify” button reappears and you can try another method, and if none is available, contact Google Support. When you type the code, be careful: Google's help center warns that after more than 5 incorrect codes, verification fails.

How do I verify Google My Business without a postcard: video, phone or email?

Only if Google offers you those methods in your profile. Video is the one it recommends when available: a live, continuous, unedited recording of at least 30 seconds, made from your phone inside your Business Profile. It has to show where you are (the street, the building number or nearby businesses), that the business exists (the sign with your profile name or, if you go to customers, your tools) and that you manage it (the register, the kitchen, the stockroom or your branded van), with no banking details and no other people's faces. If it's rejected, Google tells you why and you can record another one.

Google doesn't charge for verification

Creating and verifying your profile is free. If a letter, call or message that claims to come from Google asks you for money to verify, “maintain” or rank your profile, or asks for your code, it isn't Google: its help center says it never asks for payments, card details or passwords. If in doubt, don't reply or click any links, and go to business.google.com yourself.

Step 2

Step 2: Google Business Profile optimization, field by field

An optimized profile is a complete, accurate and active one: every field filled in with real information, the right category and steady activity. Google's help center puts it simply: businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up in local search results. It's also what businesses neglect most once setup is done. This is the review I'd do, field by field:

Field

What I'd put

Typical mistake

Name

The real one: the one on your sign, website and invoices

Adding a service and a city

Primary category

The most specific one that completes the statement “This business is a…” (“Physical therapist,” not “Medical center”)

Choosing a generic one, or the one for your most profitable service even if it isn't your main business

Additional categories

Few, and closely related. Then choose the one that best completes the statement Google suggests, “This business is a…,” and make it as specific as possible: “Child psychologist” before “Psychologist,” “Wedding photographer” before “Photographer.” A mistake here weighs more than a mistake in any other field.

Additional categories are for what you also are, not for what you also do now and then. A remodeling company can add “Bathroom remodeler” and “Kitchen remodeler”; adding “Plumber,” “Painter” and “Architect” confuses both Google and your customers. Specific services go in the services section, which accepts custom services with the exact words people use.

Ready-to-copy prompt

Act as a local SEO consultant. My business is [two-sentence description: what I do, for whom and where].
Here are the searches I pulled from Google's Keyword Planner for [city or area].
1. Suggest the primary Google Business Profile category: the most specific one that exists in English. If you're not sure it exists with that exact name, tell me.
2. Suggest no more than three additional categories closely related to the primary one and explain why.
3. Group the transactional searches into services for the “Services” section, named the way a customer would say them.
4. Flag the searches that don't fit my business so I can discard them.
Don't make up search volumes or categories. Give it back to me as a table: category → services.

Do Google Business Profile posts actually help?

Mostly they help you convert: they show people comparing options that the business is active, and they give them a reason to call. Google doesn't say posts are a ranking factor, so I wouldn't sell them as one. There are three types (updates, offers and events) and, if you don't give them a date range, they're archived after six months. Google may reject posts that include a phone number in the text.

My approach: one post every week or two, with something real (a finished job, a seasonal service, holiday hours), your own photo and a call or booking button. An auto repair shop in Zaragoza can announce winter tire checks in October; an ice cream shop in Barcelona, its summer hours.

What happened to Google Business Profile Q&A, and what is Ask Maps?

Google has removed the questions and answers section from profiles. In its place, Ask Maps is already live in the United States and India: an assistant powered by Gemini inside Google Maps that answers questions about places using profile information and user reviews. If a guide tells you to “seed your own FAQs on your profile,” it's out of date.

Google retired the Q&A API on November 3, 2025 and announced Ask Maps on March 12, 2026, initially on Android and iOS in the US and India.

The practical takeaway is clear: answers about your business will come from what your profile says, what your customers say and what your website says. Frequently asked questions are better answered on a page of your website that you control.

Ready-to-copy prompt

Write the Google Business Profile description for my business. For a restaurant, a hair salon or a clinic's front desk they're convenient, because the customer is already right there. They don't improve your rankings on their own; what improves is that you ask more people for reviews.

Before you buy one, check two things. First, that it points to your official review link, not to a middleman website. Second, that it doesn't filter: some systems first ask “How would you rate us?” and only send five-star customers to Google. That's selectively soliciting positive reviews (what's often called review gating), and Google explicitly prohibits it.

Can I ask customers to mention the service and city in their review?

It's very common advice, and I wouldn't follow it to the letter. Among Google's examples of manipulation is asking for reviews that include specific content. Asking “Would you tell us what treatment we did and how it went?” is one thing; handing the customer the line “mention dental implants in Valencia” is another. The first is an open question; the second is a script. Detailed reviews come on their own when your question invites people to share their experience.

How do I respond to a negative Google review?

Quickly, calmly and without arguing in public. Google recommends replying as soon as possible, being kind and professional, personalizing your response, protecting the customer's privacy and apologizing when appropriate. My structure, for any industry:

Thank them for taking the time to write.

Acknowledge what went wrong without sharing private details (no medical information, names or amounts).

Explain what you've changed or what you're going to look into.

Take the conversation offline with a phone number or email address, and sign with your name.

You're not writing that reply for the person who complained: you're writing it for the hundred people who'll read it before they choose.

Ready-to-copy prompt

You're the manager of [type of business] in [city]. Write a public reply to this negative Google review: “[paste the review]”.
Internal context (don't publish it as is): [what happened, from our side].
Rules: 600 characters max; thank them, acknowledge the problem without excuses, explain what we're changing and offer to talk privately at [phone or email]. Don't reveal the customer's personal or health information, don't argue the facts in public and don't use template phrases. Sign as [name and title]. Reply in the same language as the review.

Can you remove a fake Google review?

Only if it violates Google's policies, and never just because it's negative. The official route is to report it from your profile (the flag icon next to the review) or from the review management tool, where you can track its status. The evaluation usually takes several days. If Google decides there's no violation, you get a single appeal, which can include up to 10 reviews.

If you suspect an attack (several one-star reviews in a few days from accounts with no history), save dated screenshots, report them one by one stating the reason and reply politely in public to each one. And if there are threats or extortion, Google has a specific process for reporting it.

Is it illegal to buy Google reviews?

Yes. In the United States, the FTC's rule on consumer reviews and testimonials (16 CFR Part 465) bans six practices: creating, buying or selling fake reviews, including AI-generated ones; offering payment or incentives conditioned on a positive or negative review; insider reviews from employees or managers without a clear disclosure; company-controlled websites posing as independent review sites; suppressing negative reviews through groundless legal threats, intimidation or false accusations; and buying or selling fake followers or views. The FTC can seek civil penalties against anyone who violates it knowingly.

In Spain, the Unfair Competition Act classifies as misleading, unfair practices posting fake consumer reviews, paying someone else to post them or distorting reviews to promote a business, as well as presenting reviews as if they came from real customers without taking reasonable steps to check (Article 27, sections 7 and 8, added when Spain transposed the EU's Omnibus Directive). In Andorra, the law on effective competition and consumer protection doesn't mention reviews explicitly, but it classifies false or misleading advertising as a serious offense, and made-up reviews meant to attract customers fit there easily (that's my reading, not an official interpretation).

What Google does if it catches you

Besides removing the fake reviews, Google can stop your profile from receiving new reviews for a while, hide the ones you already have and show customers a warning that fake reviews have been removed from your profile. In other words: you pay to raise your rating and end up with a “suspicious” label on top of your business. You can appeal, but lost trust doesn't come back with the appeal.

Step 4

Step 4: a local website that backs up what your profile says

Your website gives Google the context that doesn't fit in your profile: which services you offer in detail, where, for whom and with what proof. A profile with no website competes with one hand tied behind its back. In Whitespark's survey, having a dedicated page for each service ranks as the second most important factor for visibility in AI search.

You don't need a huge website. You need the right pages:

Page

When to create it

What it should include

One per service

Whenever the service has its own search demand

What it includes, who it's for, an indicative price if you can share one, case studies, your own photos and a call to action

One per location

If you have more than one location

That location's name, address and phone number, hours, map, team, directions and parking

One per area

Only if you have content that's specific to that area

Jobs done there, local particularities, timelines and testimonials from customers in that area

Contact

Always

Details identical to your profile, an embedded map, hours and every way to get in touch

FAQ

When customers keep asking the same questions

Short, verifiable answers: prices, timelines, insurance, languages, accessibility

It's what we take the most care with in industries where the map is everything, such as web design for clinics or web design for restaurants: a page for each service or for the menu, linked from the profile, with the same details.

When does it make sense to create a page for each city or neighborhood?

Only when that page adds something the others don't have. Google's spam policies give, as an example of doorway pages, having multiple pages targeting specific regions or cities that funnel users to the same place. A remodeling company in Valencia with “Remodeling in Ruzafa,” “Remodeling in Benimaclet” and “Remodeling in Campanar,” each with the same text and a different name, is exactly that case.

The same company can have a Ruzafa page if it shows projects completed there, explains how it works in old buildings without elevators and features reviews from people in the neighborhood. The question I ask myself before creating an area page: would someone from that neighborhood learn something they can't find on the service page?

What is NAP, and why does it have to be identical everywhere?

NAP stands for name, address and phone number. It's the data that identifies your business on your profile, your website, directories and social media. If one site says “123 Main St.” and another says “123 Main Street, Suite B,” with two different phone numbers, Google and AI tools have to guess whether they're the same business.

Google doesn't say it requires a character-for-character match, but my rule is to treat it as if it did: pick one format (your profile's), copy it exactly into your website footer, your contact page and every directory, and when you change your phone number or location, update it everywhere at once.

What structured data does a local business website need?

The LocalBusiness markup from schema.org, with the most specific subtype available (for example, Restaurant or Dentist). Google requires at least the name and address, and recommends the phone number with the country code, the location's URL, its coordinates, opening hours and price range. Structured data isn't mandatory and doesn't guarantee anything, but it helps Google understand the page.

One warning that often gets overlooked: if you mark up your own business's ratings on your own website with aggregateRating, Google won't show stars, because it considers reviews controlled by the business being reviewed to be self-serving. It's not a trick that works.

Ready-to-copy prompt

Generate the schema.org JSON-LD code for my local business's contact page.
Type: the most specific LocalBusiness subtype for [activity].
Details (copy them exactly, don't correct them): name [ ], address [street, number, postal code, city, country], phone [with the +1, +34 or +376 country code], URL [ ], latitude and longitude [ ], opening hours [days and times], price range [ ].
Add sameAs with my profiles: [Business Profile URL, social media].
Don't include aggregateRating or review. They help with the prominence Google describes and confirm to AI systems that your details are the right ones. The rule is quality over quantity: ten sites where your customers actually search are worth more than two hundred directories nobody visits.

Type

Examples

What it's for

Other maps

Apple Business Connect (Apple Maps) and Bing Places

Showing up on iPhones and in services that use Bing data

General directories

Yelp and BBB in the US; Páginas Amarillas in Spain

Basic citations with your NAP

Health

Doctoralia, Top Doctors

Reviews and citations in the industry where patients compare

Hospitality and tourism

TheFork, Tripadvisor

Bookings and reviews outside Google

Home services and remodeling

Angi in the US; Habitissimo in Spain

Quotes and reviews within the industry

Local lists and media

“The best… in your city” lists in local media and blogs

Prominence and AI visibility

Andorra

The country's business and tourism directories, in the languages people search in

Consistent citations in Catalan, Spanish, French and English

Do business directories still help local SEO?

Yes, but less than the “listed in 300 directories” packages claim. The ones that count are the ones your customers actually check and the ones Google and AI tools already trust in your industry. If you ask an AI for a list of directories, check one by one that they exist and are still active: many generated lists include sites that have closed or never existed.

And don't stop at directories. In the same Whitespark survey, the number one factor for AI visibility is appearing in “best of” lists put together by experts, followed by service pages and a presence on relevant industry websites. A mention in an Andorran outlet's “Where to eat in La Massana” article is worth more than twenty listings in generic directories.

AI

Local SEO in AI search: AI Mode, Ask Maps and ChatGPT

Local SEO in AI search relies on the same signals as the map, plus mentions on third-party websites. Google's guide to its generative AI features says it clearly: local business information can appear in those answers, Business Profile helps make your products and services visible in them, and you don't need any special file or markup for AI.

The change in habits is already measurable. According to BrightLocal's survey of US consumers, 45% already use AI tools like ChatGPT to get recommendations for local businesses, up from 6% a year earlier. I haven't found an equivalent published figure for Spain, but there's no reason to think the trend is heading anywhere else.

Google AI Mode and AI Overviews: they draw on Google's index and on Business Profile. If you win the map and your website answers questions well, you're halfway there.

Ask Maps: it answers with your profile data and with what your reviews say, which is why detailed reviews matter.

ChatGPT: OpenAI explains that it can use your location and share it with third-party providers to show nearby businesses, without saying which providers. The practical takeaway: your details have to be identical everywhere, because you don't know where it'll pull them from.

How do I get ChatGPT to recommend my local business?

There's no button for that, but there is a method. A complete profile with recent reviews; a website with one page per service that answers the questions people ask; identical details in directories and on social media; and mentions in lists and media in your industry and your city. Then measure: every month, ask several assistants the same questions and write down whether you show up, in what position and with which sources.

Ready-to-copy prompt

Search the web and answer the way you would for a real customer: “[Recommend a service] in [neighborhood, city]. I need [specific need].”
Then, in a separate table:
1. The businesses you recommended, in order.
2. The sources you used for each one (websites, directories, reviews, media).
3. What information about [my business] you were missing to recommend it or to rank it higher.
Don't make up businesses or data. If you can't find reliable information, say so.

Run the same prompt in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity and, in Andorra, in the four languages people search in. It's a sample, not a census, but it tells you which sources you're missing. If you want to work on it properly, that's exactly what we do as a GEO agency in Andorra: getting brands into the answers of AI chats.

Measurement

How to measure local SEO: profile performance, Search Console, calls and directions

Local SEO is measured in leads, not rankings. Ranking is a means to an end; what matters is how many calls, direction requests, messages and bookings your profile generates, and how many of those leads become customers. For that, I'd combine these sources:

What you measure

Where

Watch out for

Profile views in Search and on Maps, on mobile and desktop

Business Profile performance

It counts unique users per day, not total visits

Searches that showed your profile

Business Profile performance

Separate branded searches from service searches: the latter are what measure local SEO

Clicks on “Call”

Business Profile performance

They're button clicks, not answered calls

Direction requests

Business Profile performance

The best indicator of visits to your premises

Website clicks

Business Profile and Google Analytics 4 with UTM parameters

Without UTM parameters, those visits get mixed in with organic traffic

WhatsApp messages

Button clicks and a pre-filled message

The pre-filled text tells you which messages come from the profile

Local website performance

Search Console

Filter by service and location pages

Ranking neighborhood by neighborhood

Grid tools (geo-grid)

Always measure the same search on the same grid

Customers and revenue

Your CRM or your booking calendar

Ask “How did you hear about us?” and write it down

For the website link on your profile, I'd use something like this: yoursite.com/physical-therapy-valencia/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=business-profile. That way those visits still count as organic search in Analytics, but you can separate them from the rest. And for WhatsApp, a link with pre-written text (“Hi, I'd like to book an appointment”) so you know which conversations start from your profile.

How long does local SEO take to work?

There's no official timeline, and I'd be wary of anyone who guarantees one. What you can see clearly is the order: profile changes (category, services, hours) show up sooner than prominence changes (reviews, mentions, links), which build up month after month. In an area with little competition the map can move quickly; in central Madrid or Barcelona, in industries like dentistry or law, it's a long-distance race.

Mistakes

Mistakes that get Google Business Profiles suspended (and the business name debate)

Google's guidelines for representing your business are short and very specific, and almost every suspension comes from ignoring them. These are the mistakes I see most often and what I'd do instead:

Practice

What Google says

What I'd do instead

Keywords in the name

Adding unnecessary information isn't allowed and can lead to suspension

Use your real name and put the keyword in your category, services and website

Virtual office or made-up address

A virtual office isn't eligible for a profile; a coworking space only qualifies with signage and staff on site

Set yourself up as a service area business

One profile per specialty

A practitioner shouldn't have multiple profiles to cover different specialties

One profile, with every specialty listed as a service

Fake 24-hour hours

Your hours must be the ones when you actually serve customers

Real hours, plus special hours for holidays

Categories as keywords

Don't use categories as keywords

A few very specific categories

Premium-rate or third-party phone number

Premium numbers and numbers that redirect to third parties aren't accepted

A local number the business controls

Bought or employee reviews

Fake engagement: removal and profile restrictions

A steady system for asking every customer

Changing your name or address unnecessarily

It may require verifying again

Plan the changes and make them once

Why do competitors with keywords in their business name rank first?

Because it works, and it would be dishonest to say otherwise: in Whitespark's survey, keywords in the business name come in as the third most important factor for the map. That's why you see “Pérez Plumbing · 24h Emergency Plumbers Madrid” above better businesses. But Google explicitly prohibits it, the profile can end up suspended, and any user can suggest a name correction on Maps. A profile that climbs because of its name falls the day someone corrects it.

My take

I wouldn't do it, and I wouldn't recommend it to a client. If a competitor does it, you can suggest a name edit on Google Maps using their real sign as a reference. And if your legal name genuinely includes what you do (“García Remodeling” on your sign and invoices for twenty years), there's no problem: that's your real name.

The shortcut that puts you first one month is the one that costs you your profile the next.

Special cases

Multiple locations, service area businesses and Andorra

The basic rules are the same, but a chain of optical stores with twelve locations, an electrician with no storefront and a business in Andorra that serves customers in four languages have different needs. This is what changes in each case.

How do you do local SEO for multiple locations?

One profile per location and one page per location. Google requires the same brand name for every location in the same country and allows only one profile per location. Each profile links to its location's page, with its own address, phone number, hours, team and photos, and each location builds up its own reviews. With 10 or more locations of the same business, you can request bulk verification with a spreadsheet (not available for service area businesses).

The typical mistake of a clinic chain in Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia is linking every profile to the homepage. So someone searching for “dental clinic in Gràcia” lands on a page that talks about three cities and can't find the phone number for their nearest location.

Can I rank my profile in a city where I don't have a location?

It's very hard, and not for lack of technique: distance is one of the three factors. If your law office is in Alcobendas, you may show up in Madrid proper for low-competition searches, but you'll hardly rank downtown for “employment lawyer.” There are three honest options: open a real location, build service pages with content specific to that city for organic search, or cover that area with ads.

Storefront business

Visible address, a permanent sign with the business name and customer-facing hours. It's the easiest case to rank.

Service area business

Hidden address, up to 20 areas and within about two hours' drive. No bulk verification.

Hybrid

Serves customers on site and also travels to them. It can show its address and, on top of that, its service areas.

Practitioners

A doctor or lawyer who sees clients in person can have their own profile, in addition to the one for the clinic or firm.

How does local SEO work in Andorra?

The same way, with two particularities. The first is language: in Andorra people search in Catalan, Spanish, French and English, and “dentista Andorra la Vella,” “dentiste Andorre” and “dentist Andorra” are the same need. Your profile has one name and one description, so the multilingual work goes into your website, with one version per language and hreflang tags, and into your review replies, which I'd write in each customer's language.

The second is size: with seven parishes and only a few kilometers between them, distance carries a lot of weight, and parish pages with the same text are a textbook case of doorway pages. For a service area business, the areas would be the parishes where it really works. And it's worth testing searches from several parishes, because ranking first in Escaldes-Engordany doesn't guarantee ranking first in La Massana.

Multiple locations or multiple languages?

That's where your profile and your website fall out of sync most easily: one page per location, one version per language and the same details everywhere. When we take on web design in Andorra with local SEO in mind, it's one of the first things we solve. Tell us about your project and we'll tell you what we'd check first.

Summary

Local SEO checklist: 10 steps

If you only take one thing from this guide, make it this order: accurate, well-entered information first, then steady reviews, then your website and mentions, and measurement all the way through.

Local SEO checklist

1. This is the plan, with the decisions already made. It works as a template for any storefront business: change the industry and the city and the structure holds. If you want to see what a website for a clinic, a restaurant or an auto shop could look like, take a look at these 13 real websites designed with AI.

Phase

Decision made

What's delivered

1 · Audit

The profile exists but was verified by a former employee. Then we organize your services using the words your customers use and prepare the website pages that back each one up, with the same name, address and phone number. With that foundation in place, we set up the review system with your team, which is the part that depends most on the business's day-to-day. And every month we review calls, directions, messages and presence in AI answers to decide what comes next. No shortcuts that put your profile at risk.

What I wouldn't do

Put my service and city in my profile name because “the competition does it.”

Buy reviews, ask employees to write them or offer discounts in exchange.

Use NFC or QR systems that only send happy customers to Google.

Create a profile at a virtual office or at an address where I don't serve customers.

Build twenty neighborhood pages with the same text and a different name.

Mark up my own ratings on my website hoping stars will show up.

Give my Google account password to an agency instead of inviting it as a manager.

Measure local SEO by my ranking in a single search from my own phone.

The bottom line

Winning the map doesn't come down to a trick. It comes from doing boring things well for a long time:

Real information

Category and services

Steady reviews

A website that confirms it

Mentions

Measurement

The good news is that almost nobody does it. Most profiles are created one day and abandoned the next. If your profile is complete, gets reviews every week and your website says the same thing it does, you're already ahead of a good part of your neighborhood. And that's also what AI tools will read when someone asks them about a business like yours.

Frequently asked questions

<details class="fq" name="dga-faq" open>

What are the best local SEO tools?

The free ones are enough to get started: Business Profile itself, with its performance report; Search Console, for your website; Google Analytics 4 with UTM links, to see which visits come from your profile; and the Google Ads Keyword Planner, to see how people search in your city.
